Southerntrees bear strange fruit 

남부의나무에는 이상한 열매가 열린다.

잎사귀와뿌리에는 피가 흥건하고 

Blackbodies swinging in the southern breeze 

남부의산들바람에 검은 몸뚱이들이 매달린 채 흔들린다. 

Strangefruit hanging from the poplar trees 

포플러나무에매달려 있는 이상한 열매들 

 

Pastoralscene of the gallant south 

멋진 남부의 전원 풍경 

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth 

튀어나온 눈과 찌그러진 입술 

Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh 

달콤하고 상쾌한 매그놀리아 향(香) 

Then the sudden smell of burning flesh 

그리고는 갑자기 풍겨오는, 살덩이를 태우는 냄새!  

 

Hereis fruit for the crows to pluck 

여기 까마귀들이 뜯어먹고 

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck 

비를 모으며 바람을 빨아들이는 

For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop 

그리고 햇살에 썩어가고 나무에서 떨어질 

Here is a strange and bitter crop 

여기 이상하고 슬픈 열매가 있다.

Strange Fruit란 백인에 의해 린치를 당해 나무에 매달려 죽은 이의 모습을 묘사한 것이다.     

바로 이것이 Strange Fruit의 모습인데, Billie Holiday는 이러한 자신의 동족들의 비극적인 모습을 자신의 음악에     

그대로 담아내어 백인들이 가하는 린치에 대한 자신의 저항의식을 표출하였다. 이 노래에 대해 재즈 평론가인     

레너드 페더(Leonard Feather)는 가사의 음악에서 최초의 의미 있는 저항이었으며, 인종 차별에 대해 침묵하지 않은                

첫 번째 외침 이라고 평했다.
